Laramie County Reduce Reliance on External Labs with MultiSTAT Analyser

Laramie County has strengthened its forensic and public safety infrastructure with the installation of the Evidence MultiSTAT Analyser through opioid settlement allocations. The decision was unanimously approved by the Laramie County Board of Commissioners, reflecting the county’s continued commitment to combating drug-related harms and improving the efficiency of local investigative processes.

The Evidence MultiSTAT

The MultiSTAT is a fully automated benchtop analyser that can detect up to 29 drug targets from a single sample. With a fully automated workflow, the MultiSTAT requires minimal sample preparation and runs from sample entry to results in under 30 minutes. Providing a simplified and automated workflow, the MultiSTAT reduces operator error via a 3-step process: add sample → load cartridge → press start.

A Strategic Investment in Faster, More Accurate Drug Screening

The MultiSTAT, selected for use within the County Coroner’s Office, is designed to deliver rapid, high-throughput forensic and post-mortem toxicology testing across multiple drug classes, including opioids, stimulants, and emerging substances of concern like xylazine and nitazenes. The MultiSTAT equips Laramie County with a modernised, laboratory-grade drug screening tool and is intended to accelerate case turnaround times and reduce reliance on external testing facilities.

In practice, this means Laramie County will be able to identify substances more quickly in overdose investigations, support real-time public health responses, and provide faster toxicology results to law enforcement and judicial partners.

Supporting Community Response to the Opioid Crisis

The purchase aligns with Laramie County’s broader strategy to deploy opioid settlement funds toward initiatives that prevent addiction-related deaths and improve local treatment pathways. The county has already directed funding toward community-level interventions as part of wider efforts to mitigate the opioid crisis.

By enabling faster toxicology testing, the MultiSTAT will enhance data collection on local drug trends—supporting better-informed decision-making across public health agencies, first responders, and community outreach organisations.

Boosting Efficiency for the Coroner’s Office

Like similar MultiSTAT installations in other counties in the USA, the analyser is expected to deliver:

– Reduced turnaround times for toxicology screenings

– Lower per-test costs compared with outsourcing

– Broader drug detection capabilities, especially for synthetic and rapidly evolving drug threats

– Improved operational efficiency, supporting high caseload periods
